Texas Toast Sloppy Joes: A Comforting Twist on a Classic

Texas Toast Sloppy Joes: A Comforting Twist on a Classic…

This recipe puts a delicious spin on traditional Sloppy Joes by using thick-cut Texas toast instead of hamburger buns. The result is a hearty sandwich with a perfect balance of crispy, buttery bread and savory, tangy filling.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (15ml)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 bell pepper (capsicum), diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (minced beef)
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) ketchup
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 slices Texas toast (or thick-cut white bread)

How to make Texas Toast Sloppy Joes:

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper. Sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  4. Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned and no longer pink, about 8 minutes.
  5. Drain excess fat if necessary. Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and smoked paprika.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
  7. While the beef mixture simmers, toast the Texas toast slices until golden brown.
  8. Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto 4 slices of toast. Top with the remaining slices to form sandwiches.

Serve immediately and enjoy this comforting American classic with a crispy twist!

Note: If Texas toast isn’t available, use thick slices of white bread, lightly buttered on both sides and toasted in a pan or under the grill (broiler) until golden.
