One of the worst nightmares of the winter months is increased humidity in the house, which not only tends to produce bad odors but is also a risk to our health. Since there are many reasons behind its formation, it is not always easy to avoid it. Fortunately, however, there are natural remedies that can absorb moisture in the home quickly and easily! Let’s see together how to do it!

DIY moisture absorbers

The first remedy we propose is to make DIY moisture absorbers, using small jars, bowls or simple glass containers filled with ingredients that can absorb moisture. These include salt, rice and baking soda, which boast a strong absorbent action. All you will have to do, then, is fill a small jar or glass bowl with one of these ingredients and place it, then, in the corners of rooms or closets. Obviously, however, remember to replace the ingredient when you find it too moist. Goodbye humidity in the house!

Bag method

Another very effective method, however, is the bag method. So, equip yourself with a medium-sized breathable bag and, again, fill it with ingredients such as rice, coarse salt and baking soda which have the ability to absorb water naturally. After that, place these bags in the corners of the house that are most prone to humidity and the humidity level will be lowered considerably! We recommend, however, that you replace the ingredients every couple of days, that is, when you notice that they have absorbed all the moisture. You can, alternatively, also toast them in the oven and reuse them, so as to avoid waste.

Scented dehumidifier

If in addition to reducing humidity, you also want to scent your home naturally, then we recommend making a DIY scented dehumidifier! Therefore, equip yourself with:

  • ½ lb. of rock salt
  • 1 tea bag
  • 5 drops of essential oil
  • 1 plastic bag
  • 1 glass jar

Start by cutting out from the plastic bag a square large enough to cover the rim of the jar, after which you pour about ½ lb. of salt and the contents of a tea bag into the glass jar. At this point, mix everything together, also add the essential oil drops from the fragrance you prefer most and cover the jar with the plastic square before closing the lid. Finally, all you have to do is leave the jar closed for 3 days, remembering to shake it occasionally to mix the ingredients, unscrew the cap and place it in the wettest areas of the house. Not only will your home be free of moisture, but you will also be hit with an intoxicating scent!

Bottle trick

Finally, let’s look at the bottle trick, which involves making a natural dehumidifier very similar to those commercially available! So, cut a plastic bottle in half, remembering to leave the part of the bottom higher than the top, as it will have to be the base, after which you add 1/3 lb. of coarse salt to the top of the bottle (to be clear, where the cap is). At this point, leave this part of the bottle in the freezer overnight, and once the salt inside is frozen, poke holes in the cap and place this part of the bottle on top of the other half of the bottle (the bottom) by turning the cap downward. Finally, all you have to do is place this bottle in the corners of the house and you will notice that the salt will absorb the moisture and turn it into water that will end up in the bottom of the bottle.

N.B Please remember to change the bottles every 3-4 days and let the salt dry in the oven for about 15 minutes.
