How to clean balconies and terraces so that they are sparkling clean…

With the arrival of the sun, our balconies and terraces need to be even more carefully maintained to make the most of them. Of course, between pollution and bad weather, these outdoor spaces tend to get dirty very quickly. Cleaning should be done regularly, but we don’t necessarily always have the opportunity to take the time to do it. Surely your balcony is not really used in winter, so it happens that it remains a little abandoned. But with the return of sunny days, the situation changes. Now it is necessary to get rid of all the dirt that has accumulated everywhere. Keep in mind that balustrades and floors accumulate a lot of dust, dirt, and especially bird droppings. First of all, move your plants and pots to clean them thoroughly. What cleaning techniques and products are suitable for the care of your balcony? We will show you particularly effective natural methods to make this space very clean and inviting!

Note: The remedies given are natural products. Before you start, you need to make sure what material the floor or railings are made of, so as not to damage them.

Floor cleaning

There are several types of outdoor flooring. Throughout the year they are exposed to rain and wind, bad weather that brings dirt and dust. Therefore, you can use various natural means to clean the floors of the balcony or terrace. First, use your regular broom to remove all dirt, dust and leaves scattered on the floor.

Clean ceramic floors

Ceramic floors are more resistant and therefore easier to degrease. First, pour a good amount of water on the floor to remove surface dirt. To deepen the cleaning, mix the following ingredients:

Once the solution is well dissolved, start applying it to your floor. Scrub vigorously with a broom or brush so that the foam completely removes the dirt. Then, rinse thoroughly with water to remove any residue from your cleaner and let dry. As a reminder, bar soap is a perfect ally for cleaning thanks to its cleansing, stain-removing and degreasing properties.

Marble railing

Marble is an elegant and delicate stone, which is therefore more susceptible to dust. For this reason, it is advisable to use natural products with neutral pH that gently clean the surface without altering its texture. To clean the marble balustrades, use 4 tablespoons of bar soap in chips and dissolve it in a bucket of water. Using a soft bristle brush, gently massage the surface to remove debris. Remove foam with a cloth, rinse and dry thoroughly.

Remove yellow stains from marble

You will need:

  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • 1 glass of lemon juice
  • 1 glass of water

Lemon can be used in several ways to clean your home. It will help wash the earth and give it a nice citrus freshness. Baking soda is also the ideal ally thanks to its cleansing, degreasing and brightening properties. After mixing the ingredients, scrub the surface with a brush and leave for about 15-20 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly.

Iron balustrades and railings

In the case of iron balustrades or railings, care must be taken to ensure that they do not rust. For this reason, they must be cleaned and maintained regularly. After a good dusting, they can be cleaned with a solution of water and white vinegar with a little lemon juice. Like baking soda, vinegar has first-rate stain-removing and cleaning power. To prevent rust, you can grease balusters and railings with a little olive oil, whose alternative uses will surprise you!

Cleaning glass railings

There are many natural methods to make glass shine. For ramps, the classic method with equal parts vinegar and water still works, but you can also use talcum powder, this trick is also effective. This powder is also great for removing stubborn grease stains or mold marks.

Eliminate bird droppings

If you want to remove bird droppings, remember to wear gloves and use paper towels to remove stains and wash the room. Take the opportunity to keep birds and pigeons away with this natural trick: Mix half a quart of water with a glass of hydrogen peroxide. Put this mixture in a spray bottle and spray the solution on surfaces. Besides repelling birds, hydrogen peroxide won’t harm surfaces!

Cleaning shutters

No question about ignoring the shutters! Remember to dust them and do not use water directly, as this will make cleaning much more difficult! If the shutters are made of aluminum, add equal parts of water and vinegar, if you want, add some organic detergent to degrease them well. Wash the outside and inside of shutters thoroughly, rinse and dry. Alternative to vinegar? You can always use water and bar soap or some organic dishwashing liquid.

NB: Be careful of the very delicate wooden shutters. So be careful: dust them first and then use water and soap. Be careful not to use rough sponges that can damage them. Some people even brush on a little oil to clean the wood at the end of the wash.
