But how jealous are we of our home silverware handed down, perhaps, from generation to generation? I imagine so much! Unfortunately, however, with the passage of time it easily tends to lose its beauty, as it has patches of dulling or oxidation. But fear not! Today, in fact, we will see together the towel method to make silver shine again and restore it to its initial splendor!

Preparation:

Trying this method is really a breeze, as all you need will be:

  • 1 small soft sponge towel
  • Organic soap
  • baking soda

Begin, then, by soaking the towel in warm water and wringing it out thoroughly so that it is damp but not wet. After that, lay it on a flat surface and rub the lump of organic Soap on all parts of the towel. If you have liquid soap, you can also add a few drops and rub, then, the parts of the towel to distribute it evenly. At this point, all you have to do is sprinkle baking soda on top and our method is ready to be tried on your silverware!

Method of use:

To try this method, you will simply have to leave the towel open as seen above and then spread all your silverware on top, i.e., your necklaces, bracelets, pendants, and any silverware you wish to polish, making sure to put it all on one side of the towel only.

After that, “close” the other side of the towel to cover the objects and apply light pressure to make both sides adhere well. Leave it like this for about 4 hours, finally, first check that the oxidation has been removed, then rub the towel gently over the objects and rinse your silverware-you will notice that it will be as good as new again!

This trick seems to work thanks to the mildly abrasive function of baking soda and the cleaning properties of organic soap, which is used to clean and bring to its original beauty even delicate surfaces such as marble!

N.B Please remember to use a white or very light-colored towel so as not to risk staining the silverware. Also, depending on the amount of items to be polished, choose the right size of towel.

Other home remedies for cleaning silver

In addition to the method just seen, there are other home remedies that can restore your silver to its original beauty quickly and easily. Let’s look at them together!

  • Lemon juice

Lemon, thanks to its polishing properties, is very useful for cleaning silver from oxidation and restoring it to its luster. We also remind you that it is a godsend for making steel surfaces shine, too!

Soak, then, your silverware in a bowl containing lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of baking soda and let it soak for a while. After that, wipe over your silver with a soft cotton cloth, rinse, and your silver will be as shiny as ever!

  • Cornstarch

Cornstarch is a very fine white powder that exerts a mild abrasive action that can thoroughly clean silver. In addition, it can be used to solve a variety of problems around the home, including, for example, cleaning grout lines!

In a glass bowl, add a few tablespoons of cornstarch and pour, then, a little lukewarm water in a trickle until you get a kind of pasty mixture. After that, apply the starch paste to the silver objects and use a soft sponge or even a toothbrush to scrub. Finally, rinse the objects and dry them thoroughly with a soft cloth.

  • Aluminum foil

Let’s look at one last trick to polish your silver from oxidation: aluminum foils. All you will need to do, then, is to put aluminum foil in the bottom of a container with the shiny side up and add, then, very hot water and two tablespoons of coarse table salt.

After that, pour your silver pieces into the container, making sure that the mixture covers them completely, and let it sit for about 5 minutes.  Finally, carefully remove your silverware, rinse it and dry it with a soft cloth.

Warnings

To avoid damaging or staining silverware, remember to try the remedies first on an inconspicuous corner.
