Cleaning the house always requires extra effort, especially when dirt and germs accumulate in the various elements and appliances. The bathtub is often prone to black stains, bacteria and germs that develop over time. The cause: traces of soap or products regularly used in the bathroom, limestone, hair clogging the pipes, mold stains, etc. No wonder your bathtub sometimes looks gloomy!

Of course, this can be problematic, even harmful to our health and hygiene, as we still spend a lot of time there. The bathtub is a temple of relaxation and well-being. It is also the place where we take care of ourselves, the place where we often wash our body and hair. Sanitary hygiene should therefore be impeccable to avoid possible skin aggression. The solution? Only a good cleaning. It is better to maintain it regularly so that dirt or lime residues do not become permanently encrusted. Of course, to prevent dirt from accumulating in the bathtub, there are special products on the market. However, the latter have chemical components that in the long run can attack and damage the coatings of the bathtub. We can never prove it enough, there is nothing better than using natural and ecological products. To make your bathtub shine, here are some simple, effective and economical tips. You’ll need:

  • Bleach
  • Lemon juice
  • White wine vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Ammonia
  • Cleaning gloves
  • A brush, cloth and sponge
  • Baking soda and white vinegar

Do you often notice yellowish stains or rust in certain corners of your bathtub? It is an alarm bell that warns you about lack of cleaning and ventilation. To get rid of these yellow stains and lime deposits, there is a very popular and very effective remedy: the mixture of baking soda and white vinegar. These two natural ingredients are indeed powerful cleaning agents. Limescale remover, rust remover, descaler, bleach … to take care of your bathtub, you can rely on this amazing duo!

Pour a large amount of baking soda all over the tub. Then, using a spray bottle, spray white vinegar on the parts covered with baking soda. You’ll notice that the two products react by forming a white foam, which is totally normal! Leave on for about 30 minutes. Then, use a sponge or soft brush to scrub the dirty areas. Rinse the entire surface with cold water. Don’t forget to open the doors and windows so it dries naturally. Now clean and shiny, your bathtub can finally breathe!

Ammonia

The big problem with shower walls is not dirt, but limescale that accumulates over time. To identify limescale build-up, you’ll notice white or dull spots that won’t go away. This includes the tiles, shower faucet and bathtub. To remove these lime stains, opt for ammonia. Also popular for home maintenance, it’s an excellent cleaner and disinfectant that will rid you of all crusty stains and yellowed enamel.  Put 2 glasses of ammonia and 2 cups of hot water in a spray bottle. Shake it and spray it on all calcified parts. Then let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes before wiping it off with a cloth or sponge. Finally, rinse thoroughly with cold water. Again, make sure the windows and door are open to get rid of the rather strong ammonia smell.

Salt and white vinegar

If your bathtub is full of lime, we recommend the valuable mixture of white vinegar with salt. The fusion of the two will perfectly help to clean the calcified areas of the bathtub. Coarse salt is well known to our grandmothers as a cleaning, disinfecting and degreasing agent. The same goes for lemon: this citrus fruit has surprising benefits to blast and decalcify the different areas of the house. Not to mention, it also eliminates bad mold odors and allows a fresh and fragrant scent to escape into the room.

Pour two cups of white vinegar, one cup of hot water and the lemon juice into a spray bottle. Also add 3 tablespoons of salt and mix the ingredients. You can use this homemade cleaner to remove lime permanently. Just pour it on the tub and use a brush to scrub. For even more efficiency, rely on hydrogen peroxide, which is also powerful in cleaning and descaling. You can use it to remove limescale and yellow stains from the bathtub. Simply spray it on and let it sit for 30 minutes, then rinse it off with lukewarm water. You don’t even have to scrub to get a shiny result!

Hydrochloric acid

To get rid of all the dirt, you can rely on hydrochloric acid. This colorless aqueous liquid is known for descaling and disinfecting plumbing systems. But be careful, since it is a corrosive product with a very strong odor, it must be used with great caution. It is better not to use it as a last resort if your bathtub is really very dirty. Don’t forget to dilute it with water before applying it, wear gloves and a mask and, above all, ventilate the bathroom!

Preparation:

Put 1 glass of cold water and 2 drops of hydrochloric acid in a plastic jar and stir well. Apply the mixture with a brush or paintbrush to the dirtiest parts of the tub and leave for a few minutes. Then scrub with a cleaning brush and rinse thoroughly with cold water.

Bleach

If your bathtub has visible black stains in the corners and on the faucet, you need to clean them very quickly, as they are mold stains that can be harmful to your health! In this case, bleach is the best disinfectant to completely eliminate these molds. A flagship product in the household universe, you surely already have it or you will easily find it in any supermarket.

Preparation:

In a bowl, dilute 2 tablespoons of bleach with 1 quart of cold water. Shake the mixture and spray it on the blackened areas of the bathtub, especially between the grout lines of the tiles. Leave on for about 5-10 minutes, then scrub with an old toothbrush or sponge. Finally, rinse with plenty of warm water. If used correctly, all stains will disappear in no time.

The soap

Using the above methods, your bathtub will be as clean and shiny as the first day. However, remember that this is a deep cleaning and should not be done daily. To keep it clean all the time, it is best to clean it thoroughly with soap, water and some white vinegar. Thanks to all these cleaning tips, your bathroom and bathtub will now be cleaner and shinier!
