Your dishwasher is not only energy hungry, but it also requires way too many tablets to do its job properly! What if you were to change the situation? To save a few cents and save the environment even more, there’s a ready-made solution. Just swap the usual chemicals for natural and organic ingredients. But yes, they will be just as effective, rest assured! Here are some tips on how to make your own dishwasher tabs in just a few minutes.

DIY solution: how to make your own dishwasher tabs?

In order to protect the planet, more and more ecological remedies are piling up in households: more and more people are abandoning synthetic products and unnecessary plastic packaging and instead turning to more eco-friendly, homemade solutions. It’s your turn to follow the trend and make your own natural dishwashing liquid. As a bonus, you’ll save a ton of money thanks to these homemade tablets! The icing on the cake: these tablets are easy to make, adapt to all appliances and keep your dishes sparkling clean.

Skilful combination of baking soda and vinegar

You will need (for about 48 pellets):

  • ½ lb. baking soda
  • ½ lb. citric acid powder
  • ¼ lb. salt
  • ½ cup of vinegar
  • 20 drops of lemon essential oil (optional)
  • 2 or more ice cube trays

Steps to follow:

  • First, mix the baking soda, vinegar, citric acid powder and salt. You will notice a fizzy reaction, which is completely normal.
  • You can add lemon essential oil to the mixture: This is optional, but we strongly recommend it as it brings a delicate citrus aroma that refreshes your dishes.
  • Integrate the tablets into the ice cube trays so that they take the shape. Let it dry in a warm, dry place for preferably 24 hours.
  • After this time, you can carefully remove them. If they are a bit too big, you can thin them out by cutting them with a knife.

Now you have your own homemade pastilles. Moreover, they are full of powerful properties: The ingredients they contain are known for their cleansing, disinfecting and deodorizing properties. Making your own dishwasher tabs has two major advantages: not only do you save money, but now you know the exact consistency of each ingredient you use. Thus, you are guaranteed not to have harmful chemicals that could cause an allergic reaction or damage the components of the device.

An alternative to the dishwasher tab?

After you’ve cleared the table, put your dishes and silverware in the dishwasher. Ouch, you just realized you’re out of pellets in stock! Unfortunately, you don’t have time to wash your silverware by hand. What would be the ideal alternative? Simply open the detergent compartment of your dishwasher and put in two to three drops of your regular dishwashing detergent. Also pour in baking soda until the compartment is full. Then run your machine on the normal cycle. Your dishes and silverware will be flawless!

Note: Baking soda is an excellent detergent, both mild and abrasive. When combined with dishwashing detergent, it does an excellent job of removing germs and food debris. However, since it is somewhat gritty, regular use is not very practical. This stopgap solution will occasionally help if you don’t have any tablets handy at the moment!
