Bad breath can have various causes. Diet, lack of oral hygiene or a disease can be the reason for bad breath. No matter what is behind it: it is unpleasant. But don’t worry: There is a great home remedy for bad breath. You can use baking soda to make your own mouthwash and get rid of bad breath.

Why you can use baking soda against bad breath

But why does baking soda help against bad breath? The versatile kitchen helper ensures improved oral flora. This happens because the over-acidic pH in the mouth is neutralized by the alkaline properties of the soda. This also eliminates “bad” bacteria that cause the unpleasant odor in the mouth. You can either make a paste of water and baking soda and use it as a tongue scrub or dissolve the baking soda in water to make a mouth rinse.

How often should you use the scrub or mouthwash?

For a mouthwash, stir 1 teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of lukewarm water and gargle vigorously. Two mouthwashes a day are often enough. After a few weeks, the oral flora will have completely recovered. If you have not gotten rid of the bad breath by then, you should see a doctor. In this case, there is probably a disease behind the bad breath, which you cannot get rid of with the mouthwash.

Attention: You distinguish baking soda, also called food soda, from caustic soda, which is often sold under washing soda or caustic soda. While you can use baking soda to fight bad breath, you should keep your hands off caustic soda in the process.
