Whether in the garden or in the apartment: In summer, mosquitoes become a real problem – especially when they annoy us with their unbearable buzzing and bite. What you can do to prevent it from happening in the first place and how you can best drive mosquitoes away, we explain with these tips.

What can you do against mosquitoes?

Of course, you could simply smash the mosquitoes, but by doing so you are only scratching the surface of the problem. Because with one dead mosquito, there are often felt thousands more waiting to bite you. Not to mention unsightly mosquito stains on the wall or removing blood stains on your clothes. Fortunately, there are other ways that you can use to drive away mosquitoes:

Tip 1: Drive away mosquitoes with plants

Did you know that mosquitoes are not attracted by light at all, but especially by our body odors? On the one hand, this means that if you shower more often, you make yourself less attractive to mosquitoes. But you can also take advantage of the insects’ sensitive sense of smell. And you can do this with plants: Their scent not only masks our body odor, but mosquitoes also dislike the scent of certain plants. Among the plants you can best use to repel mosquitoes are:

  • Lavender
  • Basil
  • Calendula
  • Rosemary
  • Lemongrass
  • Lemon balm
  • Catnip
  • Mint

The positive side effect: many of the plants that repel mosquitoes have a calming effect on us and promote restful sleep.

Tip 2: Drive away mosquitoes with the right clothing

If you are plagued by mosquitoes in the garden, for example, you can with the right clothing, drive away the mosquitoes and prevent bites. The following tips will help:

  • It’s best to wear light-colored clothing – mosquitoes are attracted to dark fabrics.
  • Don’t wear tight-fitting, very thin clothing – mosquitoes can bite through.
  • Wear long pants and it is best to stuff them into your socks – mosquitoes often bite at the ankle.

Tip 3: Drive away mosquitoes with fly screens

If you are bothered by mosquitoes not only in the garden, but especially in the apartment, it is best to make sure that the mosquitoes do not get in in the first place. This is where fly screens come in handy. The advantage: you can drive away mosquitoes and still ventilate properly at night on hot summer nights and improve the indoor climate. You won’t drive away the mosquitoes that are already in the apartment, but at least the screen helps to prevent new ones from coming in.
