Orchids are among the most popular of all houseplants. Few people know, however, that lemon is a clever home remedy for caring for orchids. Not only does it promote abundant flowering, it also contributes to orchid health.

Orchid care: lemon as a home remedy

Let’s face it: Orchids don’t exactly have a pretty name – after all, “orchid” comes from the Greek word for testicle. But orchids are all the more beautiful to look at!

To keep it that way, there’s a clever trick that many florists regularly use to care for orchids.

Healthy roots, juicy green leaves and beautiful flower growth – that’s what every orchid lover wants. In addition to the classic tips on location, watering and pruning, there’s a secret recipe that guarantees beautiful orchids: Lemon.

Lemon juice has a disinfectant effect and protects the plant from disease and parasites. Lemons are also high in potassium and vitamin C, which promote the growth and formation of orchid flowers.

Lemon juice should not, however, be applied to the orchid undiluted, as its high acid content could otherwise harm the plant.

How to use lemon juice to treat orchids?

Method A

  • Mix 10 drops of lemon juice with 200 ml of water.
  • Soak a soft cloth in the lemon water, wring it out and then wipe the orchid’s leaves and roots with it.
  • Repeat this procedure about once a week.

Method B

  • When watering the orchid, add a few drops of lemon juice to the water in the pot.
  • Wait about half an hour until the orchid has absorbed the lemon water, then let it drain.
  • Apply this lemon cure about once a month.
